Cruising towards Sustainability - Cruise Victoria Bio-Diesel Story
Five organizations have partnered to promote a healthy, green economy by completing a sustainable fuel loop!
Starting in the spring of 2012, CVS Cruise Victoria, the Cowichan Bio-Diesel Co-operative, Greasecycle Inc., member lines of the North West & Canada Cruise Association and Tervita Corporation have worked together in a unique partnership with the common goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Initiated by Tervita and CVS, these organizations began pooling their individual resources, expertise and passions to create a sustainable fuel loop within Victoria’s tourism sector.
When cruise ships dock at Ogden Point in Victoria, Tervita oversees the safe and proper removal of waste and ensures recyclable materials are directed to their best use. One of these materials, waste cooking oil from the ships' kitchens, is then collected by Greasecycle and transported in a biodiesel fuelled truck to the Cowichan Bio-fuel Facility. At this facility, the Cowichan Bio-Diesel Co-op recycles this and other collected waste cooking oils into 100% pure biodiesel (B100) for distribution as part of the BC Bio-fuel Network. Once the processing is complete, B100 is delivered to CVS Cruise Victoria to fuel the tour & shuttle buses that greet the ship's passengers and move nearly 250,000 people each year.
The positive impact that this partnership has on the environment is impressive. CVS's decision to use B100 instead of fossil diesel for its motor coach fleet has reduced harmful emissions in Victoria and this contribution has enabled the Cowichan Bio-Diesel Co-op to further reduce greenhouse gases on Vancouver Island by over 150 tonnes this summer alone! Partnerships such as this are an exciting step towards creating a sustainable, local, green economy and a healthier planet.
The organizations involved in this initiative would like to invite all members of the media and interested public to join us on October 1st at 10:00 AM to celebrate the first successful season of this unique partnership in sustainability. We will be congregating at the CVS Cruise Victoria offices at Ogden Point in Victoria. Representatives from Greasecycle Inc., Tervita Corporation, the Cowichan Bio-Diesel Co-op, and CVS Cruise Victoria will be on hand to answer any questions and celebrate a successful summer season.
